The landscape concept of Crawford market emerged out of an endeavor to create a memorable open space which would draw the contemporary shopper towards the historicity of the space by bringing order to the chaotic experience in a typical Mumbai market.

To do so, two historic axes were decided, on which the three significant heritage elements were located, namely the historic fountain, the clock tower and the heritage chattri. These axes were consciously kept barrier free for visual and aesthetic considerations.
The other critical design factor was responding effectively to the existing site conditions. Green patches were avoided over underground tanks, whereas the ventilation of the basement was to be deftly provided over a large seating space.
